Testing a whole chilli for SHU in less than 10 minutes

In this video, I demonstrate how to measure the Scoville Heat Units (SHU) of whole chilies using the Food Sense Generation 4. Everything you see is happening in real time—no edits, no cuts, just raw testing!

What’s Covered:

✅ Live Workflow: Watch the entire process, from chopping fresh chilies to analyzing their heat.

✅ Equipment Used:

Domestic chopper

Precision balance

Vortex mixer

Food Sense Gen 4 (with Bluetooth connectivity)

✅ Step-by-Step Testing:

Sample prep (100mg chilies + 900μL buffer)

Vortex extraction for optimal capsaicin release

Quick & accurate SHU measurement

✅ Result: These supermarket chilies came in at 1,187 SHU (wet weight). (Note: Dried chilies would measure ~10x higher!)

Key Takeaways:

🌶️ Fresh vs. Dried: Fresh chilies have lower SHU than their desiccated counterparts—don’t let the numbers fool you!

🔬 Why Extraction Matters: Longer vortexing = better capsaicin dissolution.

📱 Traceability: The Food Sense Gen 4 logs data (time, date, operator, and peaks) for quality control.
